Wild Iceland, Part 4: Snaefellsness Peninsula - September 23, 2024

Kay and I had an absolutely perfect fall day for this road tour from Reykjavik. This was certainly a region worth returning to.

Believe it or not, Kay and I were not aware of the opening below us until after this photo was taken.

Wild Iceland Part 3: Heimaey

Heimaey is the only inhabited island in the string of volcanic outcrops called Vestmannaejar, situated off of Iceland's south coast. Vestmannaejar's newest Island was formed by an eruption of an undersea volcano in the early 1960s. The town on Heimaey was partially buried in an eruption in 1973.

The dramatic harbor entrance was at risk of being blocked in the 1973 eruption.

471 homes were buried in the eruption. Markers are placed above where various streets were. The whole town was successfully evacuated without fatality.

Wild Iceland, Part 2: Jokulsarlon - September 20, 2024

This broad lagoon exists where the Briedamerkurjokul glacier meets the Atlantic Ocean. The glacier is one of many which flow from Europe's largest ice cap, Vatnajokull.

Kay licks thousand years old ice.

"Diamond Beach" is dotted with little icebergs which escape from the lagoon

Kay just had to get her feet wet.
