Perfect hiking weather and larch in its golden glory were the highlights. Being able to share the day with Nadia, our guest from Pakistan was a bonus. It was a joy witnessing her enthusiasm for the mountain landscapes.

Rockies Road Trip, Part 5: Glacier National Park - September 24, 2018
Kay and I had an enjoyable night at the Glacier Park Lodge. From there we drove to St Mary's Lake and over Logan pass to West Glacier. The weather co-operated for the most part and we enjoyed the alpine scenery.

Rockies Road Trip, Part 4: Canal Flats BC - September 22, 2018
We took a short walk into an area which is generally considered the source of the Columbia River. This loop Trail in the wetlands immediately south of Lake Columbia circles a number of springs that are the source of the Lake and the River. However, the springs are fed by underground seepage from the nearby Kootenay River which, itself, eventually flows into the Columbia.
Back in the early 19th century these flats were an important portage for fur traders on their journey to the lower reaches of the Columbia Basin from their trading houses on the east side of the Rockies.
It is mind bending to think about the journey ahead for this water as it makes its long and twisting way to the Pacific Ocean.
Rockies Road Trip, Part 3: Sunshine Meadows - September 20, 2018
During our stay at Sunshine Village I rode the Standish Chair lift to an elevation of 8000 feet on the Continental divide between Alberta and British Columbia. From there I took a delightful loop hike through a golden, larch filled basin passing three lovely lakes. Snow had fallen the night before and was falling again as I returned to the lift. The basin was on the west side of the divide in the headwaters of the Simpson River which flows into the Kootenai and ultimately the Columbia River.

Rockies Road Trip Part 2, - September 19, 2018
Travelling the Ice Fields Parkway from Jasper to Sunshine Village, near Banff, we enjoyed some beautiful stops.
This short loop hike to five lovely emerald green lakes turned out to be a real gem.
